Can We, Together?

DSCF8658

Will you hold me when I ache,
when the day that changed the world
nears its sweet dusky end?
I thought I could do it alone,
stand here in the face of
these bald transmutations,
chest thrust out
like the immutable warrior
I would like it to be,
and hold my gaze,
and reach with ease
to the song inside me
that echoes the great one harmony.
Mistaking myself for one of us, I feel
I would like to be a tree for birds,
water, sun and rain for trees,
I would like to be the mountain
that appears to need nothing at all
as though it arose from
its own history
we can neither approach nor grasp.
The parts that are broken inside
aim for the top of the mountain
(and I’ll never make it this way)
instead of circling around it,
maybe barefoot, maybe on my knees,
where there are those who are
always ready to take me
as one of their own.
Before I forget again, I ask,
Will you guide my hand into yours?
Can we ache and burn
and laugh and dance together?

Let’s Journey Together

DSCF8724

We’re heading there now
the sky, a blue sheen,
or maybe the rain gods
are giving us a day of grey

We’re speeding there,
so fast we are learning
we never really had a say
in the great unfolding at all

We’re turning corners,
and the wind on our skin
is a delirious awakening
as we glide around the bend

We are remembering our way,
we are finding our protection,
we are digging deep for hope,
we are making it together. – TS

The Path to Spring

DSCF9068

These are restless, porous days,
when what has been dried out
and hollowed in the living of
our darkened, wintry existence

Gives way, as moon to sun, to
the watering of spring, the juicy
filling out of aching joints, the
shadows of heart awaiting light

The long ache of cracking through
of stepping out, of tentative steps
to sun-drenched emergence, finding
the will to enter our rightful place

Come to the tree, then; she has been
through this hundreds, thousands
of times, has seen cold, barren land
quiver, and then zealously come to life

Feel her wholeness, her towering
solidity, and feel also the light, the
upward trajectory, ground to sky
the roots of her ever generating.

Wrap your arms around her and
remember, because you always
knew, that when mind surrenders
to heart, the movement is true. – TS

Joy to Fear to Love

DSCF9033

The palpitating in our hearts is fear.
The shaking of our limbs is shock.
The knots in our neck are frozen indecision.
The tension in our shoulders is the weight of the world.
The constriction in our throats is helplessness.
The ache in our joints is the control we never had.

And yet, it is also this.

The look on our faces is hope.
The glimmer in our eyes is joy.
The smile on our faces is optimism.
The daydreaming we do is for a good tomorrow.
The bond between us is our link to the future.
The hands reaching out to everyone else is love.

And it is not as easy as making the choice.
But it is as simple as accepting them both.- TS

Forgetting and Finding

DSCF3343

I might at times
dwell in the land
of forgetting

The moss growing
under rock,
the wind telling stories

The grass keeping
my feet warm, the
quilt of sky too

This is when the
inky specter of
thought takes over

Forging a world that
veils the true colour
and sound of things

And takes me along
a route that my
heart cannot follow

Until I hear the bellowing
cry and become aware
of all I have forgotten

And now my heart has
found her audience,
and she will not let go

And nor do I want her to,
she, so fierce, beautiful
and wise, when broken too

She opens the most
ornate gates on all the vistas,
she lights the brightest stars

And it feels we, us and
world, have always been
waiting for this this moment

Waiting, with perfect patience,
and this, I have come to see,
is the love that saves us. – TS

The Gold

DSCF1892

moving slowly around
circumnavigating holes
the contents of which
have been pined and longed for,
taking tender first steps
not for the first time,
but again and again

(the nature of hope)

circling like a tiger might
or a lioness around her prize
with the patience of still waters
or a growing moon
for the time that gaps fill
and mysteries reveal
and what is believed is seen. – TS

Japan Photo Diary: 365 (freedom on a white wall)

Welcome to the 365th photo in the Japan Photo Diary series – it has been one year! And perfect timing, as I make my way over to Canada, my home, for a visit!

Thank you for joining me on this adventure of sharing photographs of Japan over the past year. There will be much more to come, in different guides.
