Hello! I’m Tammy. Thank you for visiting There’s No War in World (The world already feels like a happier place!)
Writing has been a part of me since I was little, and writing is how I most naturally express myself. Over the years, though, I’ve come to see that writing can be a very broad thing. To write is to leave a mark, to inscribe, to reach down deep into what is on the inside and find a way to make it visible on the outside. Writing is self-exploration as much as it’s expression, a tool for human understanding and connection. When I think of writing this way, it becomes easier to see how all forms of expression might be thought of as writing. My images – photography, paintings, cloth pieces, digital works – are all a transcription of me, to you.
I come from Canada, which I love, but I’ve always felt a bit like a nomad, and this has landed me in some far-flung places, including Japan, where I currently call home.
I spent the last few years meeting, falling in love and exploring with my now-husband, writing and living in Southeast Asia and India. I met the most wonderful community of wanderers, questioners, creators and spiritually-attuned beings, all in their own way working and living under the assumption that the world can be a better place to be if we work to make it better. I developed a yoga practice, became a certified yoga teacher, and a Reiki master, under the guidance of gifted teachers. It is my greatest happiness to use my skills as a writer, artist and wellness practitioner to play a modest role in the making of a better – a more inspired, healthy, conscious and hopeful – world.
A Little Bit About There’s No War in World
“We can meet our match with a poodle or with a raging guard dog, but the interesting question is – what happens next?” – Pema Chödrön
“There’s No War in World” came out of a writing exercise I do called automatic writing – writing spontaneously, without prior planning and with no editing – to express thoughts, feelings and observations during my travels. Sometimes I wrote poems, and sometimes I wrote prose in a deliberate way, but I found that using automatic writing really helped me access parts of myself I wouldn’t otherwise have been able to, that, as it turns out, were scrambling to spill out of me. Strangely, this would happen most when I felt blocked, like I had nothing to say.
I’ve been known to be cynical (to put it mildly), and was delighted to watch a gentle, bleeding heart in there eager to emerge, wide open and curious, to roam around the world and say hello.
The title “There’s No War in World” popped out in a writing session, first inspired by the “There’s No ‘I’ in Team” idea. It also alludes to war, this reality of all the sadnesses and sufferings of the world, and the need to eradicate them, one tiny effort at a time. After all, there cannot be war in the world – we must not let it be this way – not if we want and expect to continue to living here.
How can we begin to do away with the things that cause us to suffer? It can be a simple, long-and-deep breath, a selfless action, a kind note, a helping hand, a work of art – so many more things – all done with the common purpose of eliminating hardship and making a happier world. With this blog, I would like to share some of my happy-world stories (by no means the only kind of stories I have, but a kind I would like tot expand upon). They’re a kind of written memory-guide, infused with real happenings and more than a few dream-weavings, to places where hope resides.
I love how Pema Chödrön puts it:
“Everyday, at the moment when things get edgy, we can just ask ourselves, ‘Am I going to practice peace, or am I going to war?'”
All the photos you’ll see accompanying the written work are mine – image-making is one of the great loves of my life.
I hope you enjoy what you find here, and be happy!
