The Art of Meditation

P1390807

breathe in –
breathing becomes laboured
snagging and catching before the end

breathe out –
the breath becomes a cry
caught on a gasp of surprise

sit tall –
the spine aches from holding
stories thousands of years old

be soft –
i feel not softness but threadbare fragility in
bone and skin that threaten collapse

i am falling –
but in the falling, an acute awareness
of what i’ve neglected so long

i am restless –
i have within me infinite little pieces
that have been struggling to be heard

i am suffering –
i have awakened to brilliant depths
of what it means to be alive and trying

i am human –
i will ache and burn as i sit with each one of us
feeling a unity in all our pain but also our triumphs

i am learning –
every moment, every breath in, breath out
is a change, a movement, a new leaf born. – TS

I Stay

DSCF4154

heartland
world goes to dusk
verdant landscape blushes
as sun paints the world
one last streak of fire
for this time

i stay
as she makes
her serpentine descent
i mourn the world
that will soon be
shrouded in dark

i resist
the temptation
to leap toward the horizon
and follow the sun to
all those places
on the other side

instead
hands to heart
i fix my gaze on the tree
i slow down my breath
that pulses with twilight fear
and i stay – TS

Perfect Now

DSCF1596 - Copy

Eyes shut until
you’re up close
and can smell
the musky fragrance

Of life that has
been through life,
that has breathed
in the shadows

And gasped for air
and also sung
from the tops
of mountains and

Remembered to
praise the sun
that washes it all
with fluid joy

Eyes open to
find it all, the history
and the smallest bits
full of perfect now. -TS

Above and Below

I only have five words today, but they are important ones! There is always what we see, have and experience right before us, and there is the great, wide, vast universe out there to cushion us, to permeate through our experiences and inject life and energy into them. We can only start where we are, but we can also strive to see, experience, understand more … with JOY!

The Tree on the Hill

dscf7976

if i could hold you
the way that tree does
on the perfect round hill
that seems always to
be in sunshine
its roots bare above
ground, oh, her arms,
offering themselves
in support, and there is
no effort in her generosity
and her generosity
is utterly boundless.
the tears i have shed
under the awning of her
the soothing she has given
she is hundreds of years old
I wonder who else has
breathed and heaved with her
in this country filled with
gods for her
now, hidden by the road
she is a miracle and discovery
witness to one civilization upon next
but she is the castle in the sky,
she will love, and persist. – TS

Shadow, a Reminder

p1430004

Are there words for
feelings that pierce though
space
And land in a place
that is maybe not
quite ready?
The shadow left behind
Recreates shape
Filling itself
Then disappearing with
The sun, our last
Reminder.
Still …
Birds and insects reach out
And the sound ushers the day
Which is soft
With overhanging leaves
Throwing half light
To the ground
Time spent
Gazing.
The water answers our
Call from below
By catching the sun
Moving ever on. – TS

In Unity, For Love

dscf8219

Like leaves
on a branch
I arch and I fold
toward you
heart side out
veins coursing
with fear and hope,
trembling, maybe,
a little, from the inside,
afraid at what our
touch will bring,
forgetting, sometimes,
that we are here
together, linked
by the source of
our sustenance,
heavenly sent
in unity, for love. – TS
