Make it so,
the way an umbrella shelters
without removing the
experience of rain,
the way the flags flap
in the breeze,
giving away just a little bit
of their colour
with each passing moment,
so that we may pray
through and with them,
and it’s amazing
how long they hang on.
Make it so,
a full, bright, hope-filled
life. Take it all in.
Feel the breath
moving through you.
Know, too, that the
fading of things
is also a reminder
of the fullest
expression of beauty,
at birth, in life,
and in the passing
of all things.
How about, just for now,
this one small moment,
nothing but this:
As far as I can see,
the world as a history of origins,
life coming into being,
and I dissolve right into
a time that predates me,
and the greens are readying
for the birds that will land for rest,
the sweet supple leaves plump and open,
and the sky, our shelter and window,
has not yet had to bear witness to the atrocities,
the trees are not yet scorched or felled.
But I do not have to travel in time
or let my imagination take over.
I can be braver.
I can stay.
I can let what is, is.
And I can look at my fear
until it turns into love.
Something we need to remember now, maybe more than ever, in our recent history, at least … may we always be working toward our highest potential, knowing we are not alone in our efforts …
Joy was there in the early morning,
Hoping we wouldn’t pass her by
In a world that always offers so much
To weary souls and striving minds
Living off the landscapes of our old stories,
Joy, that other most primal of emotions,
Waiting with a fierceness of strength,
Like the trees and mountains that
Fuse with our ancestral lines in evolution,
Yet with a love-laced gentility and grace,
Because she has weathered our histories,
She knows what we think we have needed
And what we can, when we try, come to know,
And she is there, on the other side of knowledge,
Her edges glinting in the new day’s sun,
Her borders diffusing at day’s fiery end,
And her capacity for play is infinite,
And her sparkle and reach will never wane,
And we can find her everywhere,
