My Dream of the Sun

DSCF1385

In my dream this morning,
I was in the ocean, maybe waist-deep,
with another woman, and there were
children all around.
Without warning, it seemed,
the sun was before us,
not looming or hovering, exactly,
but larger than life, or rather,
filling the very edges of our existence,
magnificent but not blinding
in its fierce yellows and oranges.
I’m not sure if we were supposed
to be there, so close to the sun;
I didn’t feel I was always meant to be there,
but I didn’t feel like an intrusion, either.
Maybe it’s just how it was, in that moment.
The sun sliced through the water,
where I imagined it submerged,
arriving from the other side of the world,
gaining strength and momentum
from the seahorses and mermaids
and all the other creatures we’ve
seen and imagines and hoped for.
No sooner was it hovering, briefly,
right in front of us, never burning
us with the heat that fuels the world,
than it rose, quickly but not rashly,
like an eagle soaring in the sky,
like a butterfly zipping between
the flowers of her sustenance,
upward, so high, it knew where to go.
I looked up, astonished, and exclaimed:
Wow! Is this how it happens everyday,
if you are close enough for it?

My Body My Land My Home

DSCF1119

I’ve crossed many lands,
and there are many more
my heart will guide me to

I will watch suns ascend
beyond great mountains,
feel the first blast of warmth,
gentle, hit my upturned face
and I’ll want to run toward
thousands more just like it

And the chanting I can hear
in the distance only affirms,
as I keep yearning, the
gem-like quality of this road
I have been taking

I will listen to the sounds
of a bustling new day still
tinged with the sweet sleep
of a community at peace,

I will long to be among them,
sweeping dusty roads,
performing ablutions, calling
out to neighbors, laughing,
putting the kettle to boil.

I will look for myself in it all,
the minarets in silhouette,
the sacred river going by,
the wizened face of a sage,

And I will know before I want to,
that the only land that can
sustain my earnest desire for
awakening is the land whose
borders mark the space

I take up in this world,
my body my land my home,
and I will finally
rest here too.

Let’s Build Our House

DSCF3255

The house I will build for you
will not always be the most
perfect or well-kept house,

It will not always be standing
as firmly as you need it too, upon
its foundation of good intentions

It will at times shake and shiver
as the winds howl into gales that
have all the markers of rage and fury

It might sigh and tremble and
start to collapse in certain parts
as though doubt itself built its joints

And the waters running beneath
will seep into its skin and bones
and threaten to drown the house

That we have constructed with all
the love we know how to put into
this world through the things we make

And the things we find, that we
want so badly to hold in firm embrace
and never let go, and never leave

But this house I will build for you
will always persevere, because the
blood of generations runs through

Its sometimes strong and sometimes
wavering frame, and it beats and it
palpates until we recognize the dance

And the view from all sides will
always be sublime, and the horizons of
love will always keep it standing. – TS
