Starless Dark Hours

DSCF1678

it is not my job
to understand;
it is not the work
of a moment or
a lifetime to
be consumed
by the questions
that prey on the
starless late night
hours

that hold
and stick and
won’t let go
until the sun
makes its
bold ascent
and freedom
comes again.

The questions
are one mark
of our human
existence, yes,
but so it is
that our
persistence
in the face
of uncertainty,

our will to
proceed along
even the most
shadowed paths,
these are what
imbue our humanity
with its gold,

this and, of course,
our love,
both seed and
flower of our
understanding.

Light Cycles

DSCF9298

life knows
she fills herself
with the blood and bones
of her being
knowing the cycles,
that her sun’s
succulent rise in the sky
her regal descent
give us our
rounded existence
so that there is no
basking and there
no mourning,
no exaltation of up
and no fear of falling
may we descend
as we mount
may we retreat
as we blossom
may we come to understand
our life in shadow
that paves the beauty
our road
through light

Here is a Shadow

P1460928

here is a

shadow,

it is given

its shape

by another,

upon which it

is wholly

dependent.

as the sun

glides across

the sky,

watch the

shadow grow,

contract,

darken,

become more

obtuse.

revel in the

silhouette,

its illusion of

such sharp

and pristine

clarity.

ponder the

shadow,

dig deep,

consider it

from afar

and then

penetrate

its dark

depths,

as it is

the only

way back. – TS

Where You Are

DSCF3341

I will meet you where
water turns to air
where body meets shadow

I will meet you where
dawn’s grey brightens
and flatness finds contour

I will come meet you
where our worldly view
bleeds into the horizon

And even sooner,
where it’s all coming
into sweet soft being

I will honour the way
you have found to grow
from bud to blossom

And make yourself known
and seen, and I’ll try to always
meet you where you are.  – TS

Dancing with Life and Shadow

DSCF4209

We look straight
for the light and say,
I want this.
I want only this.
We crave the
mountain peaks
forgetting the joy
of each hard-won
step, the clench
of muscles that are
so alive with the
pulse of labor,
the thrill of
carving new
footprints into
an ancient, living
thing, as
we realize that
we, too,
are living, pulsing,
exerting effort
and recognizing
victory in our
panting, skipping
hearts.
On the way to
the light,
Let’s adjust our eyes,
notice the shadows
dancing and swinging
threatening us
not at all,
no, inviting us
to touch the very
cornerstones of
our beautiful
existence. – TS

Gazing the Shadow

dscf4717

sometimes we wonder
about the shadows

the carelessness and
the whimsy of their reign

the way they cast a pall
of darkness yet move

so freely, appearing to dance
as they vibrate free of gravity’s

constraints, hardly tethered,
at all, to the plodding weight

of us, who birth the shadow long.
sometimes i want to free myself

of me, to freeze spacetime and
shed my contours, flatten and expand

as i lie down, right on top of my
shadow, no longer burdened with

the pulses and streams and biology
that catch in the light just so, and be

naked, and be with all that brilliant
sun without getting seared, and be

with the darkness without the fear,
and soak it up for holy reckoning

our shadows don’t need a chance
to play, but they do. may we dance

with our shadows, learn from their
lightness just how free we can be

when we enter the darkness
and truly learn how to see. – TS

I Need You

dscf2846

i want to say,
the light soothes
every wound,
all the shadows

i want to say,
groping in the dark
is the path, the gateway
to our happy future

i want to feel,
always, the presence
of sunlight streaming
onto my quivering skin

even as i cling,
even as i know i am,
to sneaky corners
immune to light

but the words hide.
the dance is not
always near, or
hopeful, or ecstatic.

instead i say,
let’s do this together
it might not be pretty,
or redemptive

but it is here
and i need you
and maybe you
need me too. – TS
