Finding Heart

DSCF1748

Maybe I’ve been looking
at the wrong things,
and for too long,
and in places not meant
for our communion.
Maybe there’s not
so far to go, to do things
like watch every flower grow,
the seasons come and go.
Maybe this is where
we find the time we fear
is running away from us,
while we’ve been fleeing, madly,
in every direction from here.
I want to watch every creature
take their first breath this world,
see the fledgling growth,
the wide-eyed wonder,
the absorption of everything
we will choose to give it.
I want to sit outside
and watch wind become rain,
and sun become life.
I want to feel with my fingers
how trees age with grace
and how the earth
harbors seed and root,
which provide so much.
I want to witness
the life cycle of a cicada,
and contemplate eternity
flowing in the breath of their
short-lived song,
and marvel at perspective.
I want to be so still
that I can hear
every heartbeat at once,
loving and doubting,
in honour and in strife,
from beginningless
to never-ending time,
giving everything,
needing only this.

Cosmic Connection

DSCF1275

if i could,
as a lilypad holds her flower
to the light
giving her the space of her freedom,
allowing her awareness of the depths below
while keeping safe from submergence,
i, for you,
would move to the edge of all things
so we can dance,
two free beings,
feeling the full force
of our cosmic
connection.

Shine Light on the World

DSCF7142
Life floods itself with life
but this is no drowning;
life will not be submerged.

The abundance can be
so difficult to grasp,
the infinite regeneration,

The peeking out from
winter’s dusky deep,
when from quiet readying,

From having burrowed
far, far down in the
ground of reckoning,

A budding into where
time dwells, governed by
phases of sun and moon,

And here it is again,
the thresholds surpassed,
the bounty pouring forth,

And it is as large as
dense forest trees
tumbling onto the road,

As magnanimous as
a mountain range hosting
the play of serpentine clouds,

As redemptive as grass
growing through the concrete,
going on and on and on,

And it is as small as
a cosmos being born
in the heart of one flower

The sacred lotus teaching:
how from murky depths, we
can shine light on the world. – TS

Where You Are

DSCF3341

I will meet you where
water turns to air
where body meets shadow

I will meet you where
dawn’s grey brightens
and flatness finds contour

I will come meet you
where our worldly view
bleeds into the horizon

And even sooner,
where it’s all coming
into sweet soft being

I will honour the way
you have found to grow
from bud to blossom

And make yourself known
and seen, and I’ll try to always
meet you where you are.  – TS

Where the Light Lives

dscf2387

If only our emotions were,
too, perfect symmetries,
elegant meeting places
of colour, texture and shape,
a unity of dark and light,
making breath for the world
of its own resources.
But in that they are not,
I am here in full complexity.
So that I may finally see,
they play and rage within me,
each one awaiting my love
for the gift of understanding.
As the moon rises full,
as the ocean dips and roars,
I, too, will traverse all
of time and space,
swelling with the upsurges,
folding in to soft rhythms
of contemplation,
creating the world of me
from deep inside,
where the light
has always lived. – TS

Lotus Song

dscf4209

Through the terror
of endless nights
that have erased
morning from memory,
when shadows widen
from cracks to the
shape of the universe,
and the smallest noises
taunt with lifetimes
of our engorged madness,
there is this.
There is softness,
There is us inside
the cavern of our being,
tiny as we may feel,
fluttering around
our own hearts,
as we turn to quiet song
and hug them with
tentative, hopeful
hands. – TS
