Dancing with Life and Shadow

DSCF4209

We look straight
for the light and say,
I want this.
I want only this.
We crave the
mountain peaks
forgetting the joy
of each hard-won
step, the clench
of muscles that are
so alive with the
pulse of labor,
the thrill of
carving new
footprints into
an ancient, living
thing, as
we realize that
we, too,
are living, pulsing,
exerting effort
and recognizing
victory in our
panting, skipping
hearts.
On the way to
the light,
Let’s adjust our eyes,
notice the shadows
dancing and swinging
threatening us
not at all,
no, inviting us
to touch the very
cornerstones of
our beautiful
existence. – TS

Through the Dark We Love

DSCF3124

And then the clouds
dispersed, and the sun
burst forth into day
And then the earth
suckled on spring rains
and buds began to rise
And the sleeping
stretched until every cell
came alive with the new
And the quiet
Remembered their secrets
And shared them with glee
And then we saw
the dark for the light
and the light for the dark
And we laughed.
And held our bellies
And laughed, and laughed. – TS

Where the Light Lives

dscf2387

If only our emotions were,
too, perfect symmetries,
elegant meeting places
of colour, texture and shape,
a unity of dark and light,
making breath for the world
of its own resources.
But in that they are not,
I am here in full complexity.
So that I may finally see,
they play and rage within me,
each one awaiting my love
for the gift of understanding.
As the moon rises full,
as the ocean dips and roars,
I, too, will traverse all
of time and space,
swelling with the upsurges,
folding in to soft rhythms
of contemplation,
creating the world of me
from deep inside,
where the light
has always lived. – TS

In the Dark of Light (Poem)

p1510669 - Copy

In the Dark of Light

In the light I play,

porous and awash under sun,

where the colours are more

than they are, strewn upon the ground

in their wildest symmetries –

and I am emerging into

all that I am, until the

sun sees through me

and I can’t bring my body to

hold its luminescence –

I close my eyes and wait

for nature’s rhythms to carve

smooth this rupture.

Colors and shapes dance ecstatic

before my eyes to their own echo, and in

this shadowy place I retreat,

not quite unafraid, having birthed

in its swell of memories,

certain now that the absence of

earthly hues I’ve tried to

forge into my skin is

today’s calling,

so I enter and rest, soothing

my frantic chest, swimming through

and whispering into the silence

while my bones quiver, threatening to fall –

I reach one hand out to catch

what light I can and hold

the other to close me,

to draw out another

piece of the dark.
