Love Is

DSCF1620

There is love in the face of it,
on the whole of it,
between the cracks of it,
on the surface of it,
when we think we are looking
for the answers to the hardest questions,
it is love,
when we wonder what lies
over the rainbow,
and give up in despair
because the golden pastures
seem so far away,
it is love that is there,
and it has never not been.
Love is not hiding; nor are we.
We are searching for it
in all of its guises,
we are in the process;
we laugh, cry, scream, wonder,
roar from the belly in anger,
twist and rise and howl like a tornado
in the pining for something
sensed, barely known.
And the eye of the storm is love,
and the aftermath of the terror is love,
and the dawn before the break of day
might just be when we can feel love
most palpably, in its purest form,
before it all unsettles and blows away,
so we can soak it in, lap it up,
be a body full sun-soaked love,
imbibing the love that is imbued
with the love of all the distant lands,
and we can be fierce in our protection
of love and all it stands for,
and we can bow in gratitude, humble, awed,
as love fills the pink-streaked sky at day’s end,
contemplating what has been lost,
knowing love never is.

The Beautiful Impossibility of Starting Over

DSCF1436.jpg

I look out at the vast ocean
And see nascence,
Imagine a world yet to come,
Or maybe one that has never been.
It is empty of what we think
We have known; we are free,
There is only possibility.
Save for the fact of my witnessing,
There is no evidence at all
Of our imprint,
So my visions begin to swell,
My heart starts to jump
In agitation and awe:
If I focus long enough
On the depth of blues,
And the sparkles
The sun’s reflection
Stir for my eyes,
Can I force away the future
That wants to unfold?
Can I relegate to the past
Or the never-was
What wants to bulldoze
Its way into our now?
Maybe I am sitting here,
Willing my own disintegration,
But as long as I am here,
Sitting before the vastness
Of the flowing waters,
I will carry with me hope,
The seed of every action
We take to become One:
With our selves, each other,
The majestic place
The scope
Of things.

Total Eclipse

DSCF3343

Under the Hidden Sun

I am you; I am not you.
It is as simple
And as complicated as this.
I, like you,
Can never be
Where or who or what I am not.
I cannot have been
Where I never was.
Only love …
Love knows better than we do
Where I end and you begin,
She is the destination,
The aspiration,
Immanent, within us.
I believe that love
Transcends the borders
Of our identities born and made,
The we who we are,
And who we are not,
And might yet be.
Let us not fall into
The dark hole of
Definitions, demarcations.
We have seen where this goes.
Let us be still, in silence,
So we can find
Clarity about
Our capacity to love,
And the space in which
Love happens,
A power that, if we let it,
Makes us more invincible
The more we give of it,
As we live in love,
Vulnerable, perfect, free.
Let us need one another,
All of us,
The me that I am,
The you that I am not,
The us that we are.

Free Our World

DSCF0484

We want to say
There is no place
in the world
for the violent
words we make,
for the regarding
of one another
with suspicion,
hatred and
tarnished views.
But the truth
is that
there will always
be a place
for what we make,
and that place,
as though
like an old friend
generously listening,
will expand
and grow
and shape shift
any which way
we move and act,
like a leaf
in changing winds.
It will, because
this is all
there is,
do this vociferously,
with no hesitation
at all.
So the choice
is ours:
Let us close
our eyes,
remember that
each is as scared
as the next,
as lonely
and unsure,
that each wants
to be held,
loved, happy.
Let’s not stand
for that
which divides,
and let’s do this
with everything
we have.
Let’s breathe deep,
and from this place,
of understanding,
empathy, connection,
hope and love,
with a commitment
to everything we can
to free our space
from strife,
to never tolerate
anything less
than equality for all,
and the removal
of hatred’s
consequences
and expressions,
right now,
in this moment,
begin to make
our new world.

Finding Joy

DSCF0817

Joy was there in the early morning,

Hoping we wouldn’t pass her by

In a world that always offers so much

To weary souls and striving minds

Living off the landscapes of our old stories,

Joy, that other most primal of emotions,

Waiting with a fierceness of strength,

Like the trees and mountains that

Fuse with our ancestral lines in evolution,

Yet with a love-laced gentility and grace,

Because she has weathered our histories,

She knows what we think we have needed

And what we can, when we try, come to know,

And she is there, on the other side of knowledge,

Her edges glinting in the new day’s sun,

Her borders diffusing at day’s fiery end,

And her capacity for play is infinite,

And her sparkle and reach will never wane,

And we can find her everywhere,

Everywhere.

A Vow to Live

DSCF0209

The tear that hides behind a smile,
The stem, that upward momentum of growth
That hides behind the heavy but pretty face
Lining the pathway in the magical garden__
What else can we not see right away,
What else thrives in the event of our
Distraction as well as our attentiveness?
The lotus gathering her food in the murky depths
So that it can shoot to the heavens, for us all;
The universe of ants and insects building homes,
Feeding each other and filling the very ground
Beneath our feet with the vibrant joy
Of that which, so brightly, lives;
The silent feeding time of butterflies,
The birds nourishing their young;
The hushed conversations on the other side
Of the door, or those thin wooden walls,
Who knows what worries, sadnesses and fears
Haunt the hearts and minds of our neighbours,
What joys and triumphs give them the strength
That seeps into the air we all breathe
As fiery, life-giving electricity?
And what I have done for the world today?
What have I been too scared to show,
Too weak to contain within this fragile structure
I sometimes forget has immeasurable strength,
So that I may observe it, realize its impermanence,
And allow to dissipate into our infinitely
Forgiving universe?
What if I vow not to hide anymore,
But to know what and how I want to be,
And to be nothing but and exactly this,
And to allow all the beauty I can feel
So intently with all of my senses,
To infuse every part of me until
I am THIS and harmony and all the grace?

The Fragile Day of Being

DSCF0197

The stillness of the clouds
On this silver, dewy morning
Betray the truth I try to grasp,
That I won’t always be here,
We won’t always have the chance
To do what has been calling, persistent,
Pulling at our tender,
Yearning unstill hearts.
I fix my eyes on the clouds’ loose edges,
Willing them to change,
to blur into today’s new sky,
Or break away into new formations,
Remembering childhood mornings on the grass
When we’d look up at the tufts of white
And imagine a new, festive cosmos
Of our own making and desires.
This was when
We were going to grow old together,
When there was no thought of not forever.
My body has not turned on me yet,
My mind still arrows in all the directions,
My heart pulses wild with aches and hope.
Life presents itself through and in me
With a vitality I have everything
To be thankful for, and try to honour
With my whole being.
Yet you are not here,
And my understanding will
One day grow dim,
As I continue to dwell in fear
Of everything that will slip away,
Like the fishing boat vanishing downstream,
And the cloud, that, as I look anew,
Might never have existed at all.
